Discord Makes Public Chats Searchable on Google: Opt-Out Guide

Date:

Discord is expanding the reach of public server chats well past their original groups, which is raising serious privacy questions.

A policy update from Discord will soon allow search engines like Google to index large public chats, stirring up fresh privacy fears for members who expected their posts to stay on the app.

This update affects Discoverable Servers—open groups with over 1,000 members in Discord’s public index that anyone can jump into without an invite.

Starting Nov. 16, every Discoverable Server gets a dedicated web page displaying summaries of public chat threads. By mid-December, search engines will begin indexing specific posts from these channels, according to a Tuesday announcement from Discord. The platform will leave out past message archives alongside member usernames and profile pictures.

Discord noted that moving online groups from old-school forums to its own platform created a gap where helpful answers became tough to locate. “Important details end up trapped inside Discord threads, completely hidden from everyday web searches, and we intend to change that,” the team explained.

The decision has sparked pushback from members worried about their posts spreading far beyond their intended groups, even though those channels were already open to the public.

Others welcomed the shift, noting it should make helpful solutions far easier to locate. A member commenting on Discord’s post praised the update as long overdue, while another pointed out that migrating communities off traditional forums had left valuable information buried away from web searches.

The update may also touch cryptocurrency groups that rely on Discord to share technical insights, provide help, and post project news.

A spotted roughly 800 servers listed under “cryptocurrency,” nearly 1,400 labeled “trading,” and over 700 categorized as “finance” in Discord’s public index. Discord noted that more than 63,000 discoverable communities are hosted on its platform in total.

How to Disable This Feature and Opt Out

Members have until mid-December’s message-indexing launch to opt out before search engines can display their posts online. Discord confirmed that the setting will remain turned off automatically for individuals across Australia, Canada, Brazil, South Korea, the EU, the EEA, and the UK, while teen accounts are also spared from inclusion.

To opt out, members can head into User Settings > Data & Privacy to turn off “Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages.” This single toggle protects every Discoverable Server a user has joined, based on official Discord guidelines.

Members can still turn off the feature after launch, though it will only safeguard posts going forward. Anyone looking to pull a previously indexed post needs to delete it directly within Discord, and the company cautions that search engines may hold onto cached versions for a while.

Community managers can also block posts from specific channels or whole servers from turning up on public websites and search listings by navigating to Server Settings > Web Presence.

Admins can independently turn off discussion summaries, which are set to launch this November.
