Binance Pay Brings Crypto Payments to Millions of PayPay Merchants in Japan

Date:

Binance Pay has enabled cryptocurrency transactions for qualified international consumers across millions of PayPay-compatible merchant storefronts throughout Japan via the HIVEX processing network.

On September 30, Binance announced that the feature grants roughly 48 million qualified Binance Pay consumers hailing from over 100 global nations and territories entry to PayPay-compatible vendors while traveling through Japan. Merchants continue receiving payouts in Japanese yen, leaving the cryptographic processing side of the exchange entirely with Binance Pay and its linked payment framework.

This offering is engineered for international globetrotters and serves transactions across dining establishments, retail shops, lodging providers, and alternative enterprises where the integrated PayPay payment gateway operates.

Consumers can fund purchases directly via their Binance accounts by scanning a vendor’s PayPay QR code inside Binance Pay. Alternatively, wherever supported, customers can present a generated payment barcode within the Binance application for the merchant to scan.

Binance clarified that local Japanese residents cannot access this capability. International consumers must originate from a territory where Binance Pay operates and complete the platform’s mandatory identity verification protocols.

Binance Pay Brings Crypto Users Closer to PayPay Merchants

HIVEX establishes the technological bridge linking Binance Pay to PayPay’s vendor network, enabling an international payment tool to interoperate with the pre-existing QR code architecture utilized by merchants across Japan.

PayPay characterizes HIVEX as a system empowering visitors to utilize compatible foreign QR payment apps at participating merchants throughout Japan. Local businesses avoid needing to separately integrate every international digital wallet tied to the network.

Prior to Binance Pay joining the network, the platform had already linked multiple foreign payment systems with PayPay. Earlier in September, reported that PayPay integrated UnionPay QR transactions via HIVEX for travelers utilizing the UnionPay application.

Following the UnionPay integration, PayPay announced that its merchant network could accept funds from 36 international cashless applications spanning 17 global nations and territories. The company estimated that these represented regions accounted for roughly 80% of total international tourism arrivals in Japan.

Binance Pay introduces a distinct class of funding source into that framework because consumers can spend compatible digital assets directly from their Binance balances.

Thomas Gregory, Binance’s vice president of payments and fiat, characterized Japan as a premier global hub for interconnected cashless transactions.

“Our integration with PayPay reflects a shared vision of making payments more seamless, borderless, and accessible for travelers visiting the country,”

Gregory said.

He asserted that the partnership provides globetrotters with expanded transaction options while empowering PayPay-compatible vendors to service international clientele through their pre-existing point-of-sale infrastructure.

PayPay Merchants Continue Receiving Payments in Japanese Yen

For merchants, the transaction pipeline remains linked to the local PayPay network even when a Binance Pay consumer finances a purchase utilizing digital assets.

Binance noted that merchants receive Japanese yen rather than cryptocurrency, eliminating any requirement for individual businesses to hold or process digital assets directly.

PayPay’s merchant guidelines indicate that HIVEX transactions follow a standard process mirroring ordinary PayPay payments. Customers either scan the vendor’s QR code using a compatible application or display a payment barcode that staff scan at checkout. Merchants can verify transaction completion directly through the PayPay for Business portal.

PayPay states that qualified vendors avoid submitting a separate application to start accepting HIVEX transactions, although businesses can deactivate the feature directly through their PayPay for Business configurations.

This arrangement grants Binance Pay entry to pre-established checkout frameworks instead of demanding that the exchange independently onboard individual Japanese dining establishments, hospitality venues, and retail merchants.

Binance has actively constructed comparable bridges connecting its transaction service to established regional payment frameworks. An enterprise crypto-payment strategy published by the firm earlier this year positioned digital payments and stablecoins directly alongside its core trading operations.

In an April report, Binance Research disclosed that Binance Pay had reached over 21 million merchants globally and interfaced with domestic payment networks such as Brazil’s Pix. The platform supports QR-driven transactions as part of the exchange’s broader push to render digital assets practical for everyday purchases and peer transfers.

PayPay and Binance Maintain Existing Ties in Japan

The recent payment deployment builds upon a pre-existing partnership linking PayPay with Binance’s regional Japanese subsidiary.

In October 2025, PayPay—a SoftBank Group subsidiary—acquired a 40% equity stake in Binance Japan under a strategic capital and business partnership forged between the two firms.

At that time, PayPay boasted over 70 million active users throughout Japan. The strategic accord aimed to merge PayPay’s extensive cashless network with Binance’s advanced digital asset offerings.

Their initial offerings concentrated on transferring funds between PayPay and Binance Japan rather than enabling retail cryptocurrency spending. Binance Japan customers gained the capability to utilize PayPay Money and PayPay Points to acquire cryptocurrency, whereas proceeds originating from digital asset sales could be routed back into PayPay.

The enterprises broadened that integration in April 2026 by empowering clients to deposit Japanese yen into Binance Japan through PayPay Money prior to executing a cryptocurrency order. Users could subsequently utilize the deposited capital for spot purchases, limit orders, and platform trading.

In August, Binance Japan elevated the instant deposit ceilings for PayPay Money. The 24-hour limit climbed from 300,000 yen to 1 million yen, whereas the 30-day restriction shifted from 1 million yen to 2 million yen.

The Sept. 30 service targets a distinct consumer demographic. Binance clarified that the PayPay QR feature via HIVEX remains restricted to eligible international tourists rather than local residents utilizing Binance Japan.

Japan Tests More Ways to Use Digital Assets for Payments

Japan’s retail payment sector has explored alternative methods to bridge digital assets with established checkout infrastructure.

Convenience store chain Lawson trialed stablecoin settlements utilizing JPYC, USDC, and USDT across two Tokyo outlets during August.

The trial linked digital wallets directly with Lawson’s existing point-of-sale registers. Shoppers presented a payment barcode from a compatible wallet, which clerks scanned via the standard checkout system instead of deploying a separate crypto payment terminal.

Lawson stated that it would evaluate transaction speed, system stability, and store operations prior to determining whether to pursue a broader rollout.

Japan’s payment industry has pursued stablecoin settlement beyond traditional retail environments as well. JCB collaborated with Circle in July to test USDC for internal treasury transfers and merchant settlements, with the initial phase concentrating on JCB’s proprietary cross-border fund transfers prior to potential consumer-facing applications.

Binance Pay’s newest offering adopts an alternative approach by linking international cryptocurrency users directly to a well-established Japanese QR payment network.

Gregory asserted that the firm views integrations with domestic payment networks as an effective method to deliver digital asset transactions through familiar checkout routines that merchants and travelers already understand.

Binance announced that the PayPay interoperability via HIVEX remains accessible beginning Sept. 30 for qualifying Binance Pay customers visiting Japan.
