Google Chrome Browser Will No Longer Support Crypto Mining Extensions

0

It seems that Google’s crackdown on cryptocurrencies has already started. Although the ban of crypto advertisements on Google platform will be effective this June onwards, the company has already started banning crypto mining extensions on its Chrome browsers.

Google said that the decision was taken due to increase amount of malicious mining extensions on the store that would mine digital currencies without user’s consent. However, the Chrome browser still allows other blockchain-related extensions at the moment.

Moreover, another report also suggests that Google has decided to introduce a ban on Monday, as a majority of the mining extensions failed to comply with Chrome’s usage-policy. Moreover looking to the forum posts on ‘The Chromium Projects’, many developers were unhappy with the addition of new extensions.

James Wagner, Google’s extensions platform product manager said: “The extensions platform provides powerful capabilities that have enabled our developer community to build a vibrant catalog of extensions that help users get the most out of Chrome.

He further added that “Unfortunately, these same capabilities have attracted malicious software developers who attempt to abuse the platform at the expense of users. This policy is another step forward in ensuring that Chrome users can enjoy the benefits of extensions without exposing themselves to hidden risks.

Secretive crypto mining activities had become increasingly common in the recent months with government and companies having a tough time to detect them and reduce their influence.

Also, many crypto mining extensions on the Chrome browser appeared to provide a different service but underneath would secretly mine cryptocurrencies consuming a lot of your computer’s power.
